Weddings of 4 Sisters

1953 Daisy Yvette married to Robert Bertram Jansz
1955 Tulip married to Abdul Rashid bin Mohd Yusope
1958 June married to Devdass Kingsley Nathaniel
1959 Esther married to Aelian Cantlay Schokman

My mother was the eldest of 4 sisters. The sisters are named after flowers, season or month - Tulip, Esther, June and Daisy. That's how Dato Mahadzir Lokman remembers them - with "flower names". They all married and have families, kids and grandchildren.

My parents are Tulip and Abdul Rashid.

I have met Aunty Esther but not her husband Aelian Schokman. I have met their son Jeffrey, Jeffrey's wife Siti Azar and their children, at Hotel Impiana KLCC in KL when I was writing my book (draft). I have met their daughter Veronica Schokman at my brother Farid's daughter Adibah's wedding at Masjid Firdaus (atas bukit) at Templer Park, outskirt of KL.

I have not met both Aunty June and her husband Devdass Nathaniel Kingsley. I have not met any of their children (my cousins).

I have met both Aunty Daisy Yvette and her husband Robert Jansz at their home in Western Australia, before Uncle Robert passed away on 11 December 1988 (2 weeks before Christmas). I also met all her children (except Frances) when I visited Aunty Daisy after Uncle Robert passed away. I met Frances for the first time when I visited her family home at her farm in Sepertine Way, Stake Hill, WA on 10 February 2013. Aunty Daisy took us there - myself, my youngest daughter Yus, and husband Affandi.

Tulip and Abdul Rashid bersanding on 24 December 1955 at 262-T Banda Hilir, Malacca. Akad nikah was held earlier in November 1955.
Esther and Aelian Cantlay Schokman married on 5 September 1959, in KL.
June and Devdass Kingsley Nathaniel married on 8 February 1958, in KL.

------

According to my cousin Jeffrey and his mum (my Aunt Esther), Aunty Daisy got married first.

In a 1953 wedding photo of Catherine's youngest daughter, Daisy Yvette, we can see many of the family members gathered on the steps of the church. Daisy informed me that she married not at St Mary's Church in Kuala Lumpur (level with the Merdeka Padang), but at a church up on a hill. This church would be St John's Church (now cathedral), Bukit Nanas, Kuala Lumpur.

Tulip bt Che Lah (6) Send-off 1952

Before my mother left for her studies overseas, her family and relatives gathered for the send-off in KL and in Penang. There were a few photos taken of her family and relatives. One photo was taken at the Maxwell home which had a big garden. Another photo was when the family gathered at the KL railway station. In another photo the family gathered at her aunt's house in Sg Gelugor in Penang. In another photo, the family and relatives gathered on board a ship, the Carthage, which possibly docked at Swettenham Pier in Penang.  That's what I know from reading history. I think my mother and her family visited their Penang relatives before she sailed to Great Britain in 1952. My mother said, her father was newly married when she was about to sail overseas. She said she met them both as both came to see her off. Her step-mother is in one of the family photos at the KL railway station. She's from Bangsar.

Aunty Daisy Visited Malaysia

Aunty Daisy and her family migrated to Western Australia in the early 1970s, maybe in 1972. I was in Form 2 at Malacca Girls' High School (MGHS) in Durian Daun, Malacca. Aunty Daisy often returned to Malaysia, mainly to celebrate her father's (my grandfather) birthday. I was away at Kolej Tunku Kurshiah (1974-75) or overseas (1976-1982).

Aunty Daisy Yvette arrived at Subang International Airport. From left: Grandmother Daisy Catherine, Aunty June, Aunty Daisy, Aunty Esther and Dr Che Lah. His wife Mariah is behind him.

Grandmother and Great-Grandmother

My cousin Amanda Zoe Nathaniel keeps many family photos of her family. My late Aunty June was her mother. I went through her Facebook photo album and found 2 photos which I thought I would never get to see. These are the photos of my maternal grandmother and my great-grandmother. My mother used to tell us a lot about them when I was a little girl.

From left: Stephanie, Aunty June, grandmother Daisy Catherine DeCoursey Bulner (eldest of 6 sibs), Edward Kenneth Bulner @ Humphrey (youngest brother of Daisy Catherine), Devdass Kingsley Nathaniel (June's husband), Vanessa, Rex and Amanda. Gerald is not in this photo.

YUSUF ALI: Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Tulip bt Che Lah (5) My mother

My mother was a big source of inspiration for everything, including problems related to babies, young girls and working mothers.

She was named after a flower, and the Dutch love this flower. She did not say very much, but led by example.

She was a dedicated mother who had to divide her time between family and work. She managed her kids well except when she was ill and I had to take over her chores.

She was loved by her students at all the schools she had taught. She related to me that the Sultan Ismail College (SIC) boys even hosted a dinner in Putrajaya in her honour, which she attended with sheer delight.

Her students treasured her for her friendliness and the warmth she brought them.

I remember her as my English coach at home. Sometimes she would tutor me on Mathematics. I knew it was so frustrating for her to teach me Mathematics as I could not comprehend the English text in my Mathematics book! My father took over from her and I had to buck up or I would hear the thunder roar over by shoulder!

My mother taught me the piano when I was 11, and we continued to play as duet till I was 15 - when I left for Tunku Kurshiah College.

She was a really good pianist. She told me she was a Grade 5 when she went to England and completed Grade 8 there.

She also taught me how to cook and sew. By age 9, I was already a wide-eyed seamstress and a pint-sized soux chef!

She was a good historian. She knew very well about the Second World War (WWII), Winston Churchill, the fates of the Jews, the Holocaust, Ann Frank's diary, and the formation of Israel.

But she was first and foremost, a Geography and English teacher. Having studied in England in 1952-53, History, Music and Medicine interested her immensely. She knew these topics better than me.

Even though I was already fixed on becoming a biochemist, she brought me in the late 1980 to see her tutor, Mr Roger Raymond Sellman.

Mr Sellman was a renowned senior British historian who was retired and lived with his wife Mia Sellman, and their dog (Twiggy) at their single-storey bungalow in Pound-Down Corner, Exeter in England.

Mr Sellman talked me into changing my interest and future profession. He said it would be desirous to accept History (as he had done) and desert Biochemistry altogether. I told him it was impossible and too late for me to switch fields but I thanked him for his encouragement.

My eyes were fixed on Twiggy and my favourite bread-and-butter pudding which Mia had specially prepared for me!

I continued to correspond with the Sellmans till I got married at 24 in 1983, and left home to work in Kelantan where I work presently.

Terima kasih, Mak!

Family Tree of Frederick William Bulner

The family trees are posted here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lkawgw/gen1087.html
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lkawgw/gen1235.html (accessed 5 July 2014)

This is my mother's family tree. It was prepared online by my cousin Muhamed Al-Jeffrey Schokman Abdullah with the help of many others. Most of the family tree members are in Facebook.

My maternal great-grandfather was Frederick William Bulner (my mother said he was a German/Bavarian). My maternal great-grandmother was Emma Frances Krasse (she was Dutch; my mother said she was pretty).

My maternal grandmother was born Katherine Daisy de Coursey Bulner (also written as Decoursey Bulner). When she married my grandfather, she was named Maimunah Daisy and was called Munah. Their English wedding was registered at the historic St Mary's Church in Kuala Lumpur. This church is level with the nearby field (Padang Merdeka). Aunty Esther gave me their English certificate of marriage. Aunty Esther said they followed the rites of the Church of England.

My grandmother's youngest brother, Humphry @ Edward Bulner, recently came to visit KL and met with my aunt Esther and her son Jeffrey. Jeffrey has a photo in Facebook. We still have many maternal relatives in Singapore.

My maternal grandfather was Dr Che Lah bin Mohamed Joonos (pronounced You-nose). In the Dutch alphabet, the letter J has a Y sound. The same is true in Spanish. He was an early Malay doctor from Penang. I wrote about him in both my books on The Early Malay Doctors. He worked as a doctor mainly in Kuantan, Kuala Lumpur and Sungai Buloh. At that time, Malay doctors were treated as second class citizens and were paid half of what their British counterparts received. That's Malay history of medicine in British Malaya.

My late mother was born Jumabee Tulip bt Che Lah. She was born at Tanglin Hospital and raised in KL till age 23.

My late father was born at home at Imbi Road in Kuala Lumpur. He was Abdul Rashid bin Mohamed Yusope in KL. He was a big bully in his village (jaguh kampung). He was of Persian-Arab and Minangkabau-Chinese mix). His mother was Javanese Malay from Kg Baru, Kuala Lumpur.

My maternal blood aunts are Esther, June and Daisy. I met my 3 aunts when I was about 16-17 during the memorial service (tahlil) for Uncle Philip at Pak Saleh's house in Sentul, KL. Aunty June had passed away long ago in 1990. Her children live in KL. Aunty Esther lives in KL, near Jeffrey's house. Aunty Daisy lives in Western Australia.

Philip @ Mohd Noor

Philip @ Mohd Noor

Philip was adopted from a Singapore orphanage at the time when Dr Che Lah was attending a refresher course at the old Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore. Mak said Philip's father was Danish (orang Denmark) and his mother was Singaporean Chinese.

Mak helped to look after baby Philip at the Sungai Buloh Settlement for lepers. They all lived there throughout the Japanese war (1941-1945).

Philip grew up to become a handsome lad and we all called him Elvis (after Elvis Presley) as he would play the guitar and resembled Elvis Presley. Elvis in YouTube.

Philip @ Mohd Noor in early 1960s
We all waited for the Indian procession to pass along Glugor Road (now Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah), Penang. Philip is at extreme right. My mother is the one holding the little boy's hands.

Philip married a Terengganu beauty queen (Harissah) but they divorced without any children.

He remarried a lady in Shah Alam, but he died early without leaving any children.

One day Philip returned to Penang to see Dr Che Lah. He complained of light headache and was taken to GH Penang. He was diagnosed of brain tumour and was operated. He was looked after by Jalal and staff of GH Penang. He did not progress in the post-op period. Philip died from complications following surgical removal of a brain tumour. Philip died in the early 1970s.

Mak was terribly upset when Philip died as she loved him very much. Mak became very quiet after Philip's death.

I went back to GH Penang in 2012, and there were still people who remembered Philip. There was Encik Ismail Hashim who looked after Philip till he died. Encik Ismail's father knew Dr Che Lah. Encik Ismail recalled they were always together - Philip, Ismail and Jalaluddin (Jalal). Jalaluddin bin Ali Baba was Dr Che Lah's nephew.

Esther 1933-2018

Esther, second daughter of Dr Che Lah

Jaleha Esther (born Friday, 10 March 1933) worked in the Accounts Department in the Malayan Railway Administration in Kuala Lumpur until she retired in 1988. She married Aelian Cantlay Schokman (deceased 15 May 2011) and has two children - Muhamed Al-Jeffrey and Veronica.

Jeffrey married Siti Noor Azar bt Majid and they have four children - Muhamed Armin, Nurlisa Sharmin, Muhamed Aiman and Nur Hanis. Siti Noor Azar operated a pharmacy. She then left for another job.

Jeffrey

I met Aunty Esther and Muhamed Al-Jeffrey and his family at Hotel Impiana KLCC. At the time, Uncle Schokman was unwell and could not make it. Aunty Esther looks just like my mother Mak.

Aunty Esther has passed away on 24 June 2018. Jeffrey announced his mother's demise in Facebook.

She is laid to rest at Ampang cemetery in Kuala Lumpur.

Tulip bt Che Lah (3) Brief

Hajah Jumabee Tulip bt Che Lah (Wednesday, 4 November 1931-Saturday, 5 June 2004) married to Haji Abdul Rashid bin Mohd Yusope (Saturday, 28 November 1931-Sunday, 8 March 2009). They both aspired to be doctors but had obstacles and had to abandon their dreams. They both opted for teaching and attended the Malayan Teachers’ Training College at Kirkby, near Liverpool, England. They were in 2 different batches. Abdul Rashid was in the first batch 1951-1953, and Tulip was in the second batch. After completing their studies, they both taught at Jasin English Primary School, Malacca before they married in Bandar Hilir, Malacca on Saturday, 24 December 1955.

Tulip grew up in Kuala Lumpur and had completed Grade 5 of her piano lessons. She completed her Grade 8 piano lessons in England. She had a flair for languages, loved art and craft, sewing plus outdoor activities. She was a good debater, sprinter, swimmer and played field hockey as well as ice hockey. She became a teacher and taught English, Civics and Geography for 33 years. She was in charge of the Girl Guides and the St John Ambulance at the schools where she taught in Malaya and Borneo. A trusted person, she was placed in charge of the handover of the Cambridge Examinations to the Malaysian Examination Syndicate for the Home Science component while living in Kedah (early to mid-1960s). She taught at Sabah College in Jesselton (Kota Kinabalu), Sultan Ismail Secondary School and Sultan Ismail College (SIC) in Telipot in Kelantan, Malacca Girls’ High School at Durian Daun and Penang Chinese Girls’ School in Gottlieb Road, near Pulau Tikus, Penang.

Her husband, Abdul Rashid loved carpentry, house building and electrical wiring besides scouting activities, fishing and swimming. He attended the Malay College Kuala Kangsar and did a year of Medicine at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore before he quit to study in England. He worked as a Simultaneous Interpreter in the Malaysian Parliament for the first Malaysian Cabinet before he quit and returned to teaching. He was a lecturer for the Malay Language, Mathematics and Physics. He taught for more than 20 years.

The couple has seven children – Mohd Sharif, Sharifah, Faridah (that's me), Rabi’ah, Mohd Farid, Mohd Amin and Aminah.

Tulip passed away in 2004 and is interred at Tanah Perkuburan Islam Selayang Baru in Selayang. This is an old and expansive graveyard, but it is fast filling up, and almost full in 2012. Her grave # is A433.

FAQ

Have a nice day!

People have asked me these questions.

1. Is there a sib named Tuan Haji Samsudin bin Mohd Joonos?

At the time of this writing, it is known that Dr Che Lah had no sib named Tuan Haji Samsudin bin Mohd Joonoos.

2. Is Dr Che Lah related to Che Tot Junoos?

Dr Che Lah is not related to Che Tot Junoos (who was called Tok Mamee Tot) who stayed in front of the mosque at Kampung Makam in Penang, and her brother, Mohamed Yusoff Junoos. However, the search for the relatives of Mohamed Yusoff Junoos by his great grandson Iszham Idris (Negeri Sembilan) is on-going.

Family History of the Shaik Ahmad Clan

FAMILY HISTORY

How did the Shaik Ahmad clan came to be? What happened in our clan history? What is the source of our clan history? I will tell you a bit of the history of the Shaik Ahmad clan, from whatever I know and have heard. There are many stories and theories.

(1) From Tok Kamarudin bin Captain Md Noor
According to Tok Kamarudin bin Captain Md Noor, Shaik Ahmad was from Hyderabad near Darjeeling in Deccan, India. In the 1800s, Shaik Ahmad came to Malaya with the British army. Shaik Ahmad was either a dhobi or tailor in the British Army.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5q7E-H5bPE

(2) Hyderabad from an Indian professor's POV (point of view)
I met Prof Ravindra of UMS (Universiti Malaysia Sabah) on 4 March 2013 at the PhD viva for Ms Lye Huey Shi, PPTI, USM Penang and after the viva, on our way to Kapitan Restaurant near Queensbay Mall, Penang. Prof Ravindra has been with UMS for eight years. I asked him about Indian social etiquettes. According to him, Indian females do not shake hands with males. However, today, they are not shy nor care, and they not only shake hands but also hug and kiss as part of meet and greet or parting. I asked Prof Ravindra where he was from. He is from Hyderabad. I asked him about Hyderabad. I also informed him that my ancestors were from Hyderabad. He asked whether I still have relatives in Hyderabad. I replied I don't know. Prof Ravindra said to contact him should I want to go to Hyderabad. He can show me around Hyderabad. I thanked him.

(3) From Uncle Abdul Mutalib Wahab
Shaik Ahmad was from Hyderabad, who came with the British Army to Malaya/Penang. He and another army man were assigned to work under Brown. He was either a cobbler or tailor.

(4) From me
Shaik Ahmad came to Penang (island or Province Wellesley) as the Bengal marines and lascars under the British Army in the 1800s. He was probably first stationed in Butterworth before coming to  live on Penang island. On Penang island, he was probably at Kg Dodol first and then moved to Kg Sg Gelugor in Glugor. His youngest son Capt. Md Noor was born in 1890 at Glugor. Shaik Ahmad was a well-known figure in Penang. The ancestral graves are located at Jalan Perak (Perak Road Cemetery). He was either a tailor, dhobi or cobbler and was sent to work under Mr JG Brown and/or Mr DAM Brown of Glugor Estate, Penang. In Malaya, Shaik Ahmad married Puan Hajar of (probably Bagan Dalam in) Butterworth and they had six children (three sons and three daughters):-
  1. Hamidah Bee bt Shaik Ahmad
  2. Jan Bee bt Shaik Ahmad
  3. Mohd Joonos bin Shaik Ahmad - clerk
  4. Mohd Ali bin Shaik Ahmad
  5. Mariam bt Shaik Ahmad, and
  6. Captain Md Noor bin Shaik Ahmad, MBE - Malay Interpreter at Supreme Court, George Town, Penang; SSVF for P and PWVC (born 1890 Glugor)
Painting of Brown's Glugor Estate in Penang. From Penang Museum.
The island in the background at right is Pulau Jerejak. The big building overlooking the sea could be the old Chancellory at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Minden Campus in Penang.
