Bulner-Melder Family Trees

Sri Lanka Burgher Family

The Bulner families are found in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Australia (Melbourne, Western Australia), Malaysia, Singapore, UK and USA (Texas). They have intermarried at the different places. It will be good to trace them by name/surname, date of birth (DOB), date deceased, date & place of marriage and details of their children and descendants.

Her father's father (i.e. her paternal grandfather) was (or rather has been noted in her diary as) William Edward Godfrey Bulner, born 1830, died 1893. Married Annie Susan Bertus (born 1834, died 1886) on 29 March 1854 at the Dutch Reformed Church, Mannar, Ceylon. Son: William Reginald BULNER.
In the genealogy of the 'Bulner Family Tree', under I, No. 3, there is listed a 'William Ethelwald Godfrey, born 15 November 1829. Could this be one and the same person listed above (i.e. William Edward Godfrey Bulner, born 1830)? Perhaps my grandmother has incorrectly recorded this info in her notebook.

========== Re-do the Bulner Family Tree ===========

First Generation

Jacob BULNER was probably born circa 1722-1733. He was from Osnaburg, Germany. His parents were probably farmers. He was probably renting a place in Amsterdam while waiting to join the VOC and to sail away, maybe for greener pastures, as the Germans were defeated in battles and the plague had hit Europe. Often, the VOC soldiers would name their landlords to receive a portion of their pay (paid by debenture).

He could have married at this time or had a partner. He probably married before leaving Holland, or married in Ceylon. He married __ and had a son, possibly named Joseph Bulner.

He was probably a senior man when he enlisted with the VOC military. He was listed as Sergeant Jacob Bulner with 2 other Bulners in the list of names of VOC military personnel. He enlisted as a soldier (soldaat) on 1 January 1752 and sailed on the ship Herstelder for Ceylon via Texel Island, Cape of Good Hope. He reached Ceylon in August 1752.

Jacob Bulner served in Ceylon till he passed away on 25 May 1790 (based on his VOC ledger entry).

-----
Second Generation

Joseph BULNER was specified in a VOC document as a Burgher. He could have been born in Ceylon between 1752 and 1787. If he was born in 1769, he was 18 years old when he joined the VOC in Holland. If he was born in 1762, he was 25 years old when he joined the VOC in Holland.

He enlisted at Chamber Amsterdam (room Amsterdam) on 2 June 1787 and joined the VOC as a young sailor. He sailed to Batavia on the ship Zeeland, to Batavia, via Texel Island at the Cape of Good Hope. He reached Batavia in February 1788.

Batavia is now Jakarta in Java, Indonesia. Java is an island. Java is referred to as Pulau Jawa in Malay.

Joseph Bulner did not serve all his time in Batavia. He returned to the Cape of Good Hope, where he resigned from the VOC in 1791, ie when the VOC was dissolved. He became a "free man" at the Cape in South Africa. He went to Ceylon and married there. His son was most probably named Jacob Bulner, ie named after his deceased father.

I am trying to find out if my father  who enlisted in the Malayan Volunteers. I was told recently that my uncle Harold Speldewinde, recently deceased, and my father had both enlisted but were told at the fall of Penang to get out of uniform and blend into the local population for the duration of the conflict. My father went on to serve with Special Branch in Malaya during the Emergency and my uncle was also a decorated war veteran.

Coleman Street in Singapore

Coleman Street was named after an Irish architect named George Drumgoole Coleman. He was the first Superintendent of Public Works, Singapore from 1833 to 1841.

----
Hotel de la Paix

Hotel de la Paix was established at 3 Coleman House, Coleman Street, Singapore in 1865. It was one of the earliest hotels established in Singapore before WWI. It was a first class hotel in its heyday. It operated in the personal residence of George Drumgoole Coleman, who was the first Superintendent of Public Works in Singapore (1833-1841). Mr Coleman left Singapore in 1841.

Mr Coleman's residence continued to house other famous hotels and residences such as the Gaston Dutronquoy, London Hotel, Adelphi Hotel, Hotel de la Paix, Tan Yeok Nee residence, Burlington Hotel, and again Hotel de la Paix till 1919 (after WWI).

The Adelphi Hotel was used for the graduation dinner to celebrate the medical graduates of the King Edward VII (KE VII) College of Medicine since 1910 (Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos graduated in March 1930).

The previous manager of Hotel de la Paix was a widowed Mrs Kahlcke. Her husband was Mr H Kahlcke. He had returned to Europe (probably died there). Mr Percy Bulner became its new manager in 1904.

Aunty Daisy Yvette was born on Wednesday, 17 July 1935. She is the youngest daughter of Dr Che Lah bin Mohamed Joonos and Daisy Katherine Decoursey Bulner. She is the youngest of four sisters. She was known as Baby. Her name Baby was written on some photographs in her elder sister's collection (some photos are now with me).

------
Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos (bride's father)
Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos (1903-1986) was a Malay man from Kg Sg Glugor in Glugor, Penang. Joonos is pronounced as Yoo-nose. Joonos is the Dutch spelling for Yunus. His name is often contracted to Dr MJ Che Lah on his official documents.

------
Daisy Katherine Decoursey Bulner (bride's mother)
Daisy Katherine Decourcy Bulner was a Dutch Burgher from Ceylon. She was born in Kandy, Ceylon on 5 March 1911. Her family emigrated to Malaya when she was a small child. She was a flower girl at Guy & Eulie's wedding in Kuala Lumpur in 1916, that is, she was five years old. She was present at her daughter Daisy Yvette's wedding in 1953. She wore a white hat at her daughter's wedding. She worked as a clerk at the military base in Gombak area. Aunty Daisy Yvette can't recall the name of the military base/camp where her mother had worked. She said it wasn't Sg Besi.

------
Wedding
Aunty Daisy Yvette was the first of 4 'flower sisters' to marry. She was 17+ years old when she married in 1953.

According to my cousin Muhamed Al-Jeffrey and his mum (my Aunt Esther), Aunty Daisy got married first. Aunty Daisy married to Uncle Robert Jansz in 1953 at St John's Church (Cathedral) at Bukit Nenas in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (see wedding photo below).

In Daisy Yvette's 1953 wedding photo, we can see many of the family members gathered on the steps of the church.

Daisy Katherine was already divorced by the end of June 1949 (refer newspaper). Dr Che Lah pursued his postgraduate studies in Singapore in 1949-1950 (2-year course by research) and earned his MRCP in October 1950. He then went for 3 months holiday to Europe (refer photos and picture postcards, ppc, of Oct-Nov-Dec 1950).

When I visited Aunty Daisy in Mandurah in mid-February 2013, she helped me to identify the people in her wedding photo of 1953 (below). Aunty Daisy informed me that she married not at St Mary's Church in Kuala Lumpur (level with the Merdeka Padang), but at a church up on a hill. This church would be St John's Church (now cathedral), Bukit Nenas in Kuala Lumpur, British Malaya.

There are some people hidden behind the plants at left. I cannot see their faces. There is a thin tall man behind the plants at right. Nenas or nanas is Malay for pineapple.

Back row from left: Humphrey @ Edward Bulner, Daisy Catherine d' Courcy Bulner (mother of bride), Mr Robert Oliver Jansz (groom's father), Reginald Kingsley (Uncle Reg, husband of Aunt Hazel Jansz), Mrs Jansz/Victorine Alfonso (lady with black hat is groom's mother), and Aunt Hazel Jansz (groom's elder sister).

Wedding of Daisy Yvette and Robert Bertram Jansz,
at St John's Church (now cathedral), Bukit Nenas, Kuala Lumpur. 1953

-------
Husband
Uncle Robert Bertram Jansz was born on 7 December 1931 at the European Hospital, Bangsar in Selangor, British Malaya. He is deceased on 11 December 1988, two weeks before Christmas. He was a clerical clerk, initially at the military base in Kuala Lumpur, and then at Terendak Camp in Malacca. From Malacca, the family then emigrated to Australia on 7 December 1968 (which coincided with Uncle Robert's birthday). He continued to work in Perth from December 1968 onward. Date of the family's migration was given by his son.

----------
British Military Hospital (BMH) Terendak
There is a big multi-storey hospital at Terendak Camp. It is on a hill and by the sea. I have never visited this hospital and overlooked this hospital when I wrote my books on The Early Malay Doctors. I didn't know it exists.

Terendak Camp
Terendak Camp itself seems like a complete city by the sea. I remember its name from my student days at Malacca Girls High School (MGHS). We went to Tanjong Bidara ... I think close to Terendak Camp. When we sent our eldest daughter to a college at Lundu, there was a turn-off to Terendak Camp.

-------
Children
The couple have seven children. Her last child was born in Australia. Some of her children and grandchildren are married. All the families live in Western Australia. I don't have their birth dates or birth order.
  1. Frances Harwood (nee Jansz)
  2. Jennifer Jansz (Jenny)
  3. Robby Jansz
  4. Christopher Jansz
  5. Victoria Vlahov (Vicky/Vikky, nee Jansz)
  6. Andrew Jansz
  7. Mildred Jansz (Millie)
-------
Emigration to Australia
Aunty Daisy Yvette's family migrated to Perth, Western Australia on 7 December 1968 (on Uncle Robert's 37th birthday). I was in Primary 4 in Sabah at the time, attending the Tanjong Aru Primary School at Tanjong Aru in Sabah.

-------
Balga, Western Australia
Dr Che Lah and his second wife Mariah visited Daisy Yvette in Balga, north of Perth in Western Australia in 1970 (photo). When I was doing my PhD at the University of Western Australia (Dept of Physiology, UWA October 1986-August 1989), my family and I visited Aunty Daisy at home, close to Christmas, and we had lunch together. Most of her children also came to see us. She was a good cook. She made sambal udang kering for lunch, which I particularly liked. I had never tasted the dish before and I don't know how to cook the dish. I tried making it in Kelantan, but it didn't taste as good as the one she cooked in Balga. Aunty Daisy sold off her Balga home and moved south to Mandurah. I didn't know she had moved.

Mariah in Australia 1970. I think the house in this photo is not Aunty Daisy's house because the main door is in front. Her main door was at the side. I think this photo was taken from her house.

-------
Uncle Robert's demise
Uncle Robert passed away on 11 December 1988, four days after his 57th birthday, and two weeks before Christmas. He passed away at home in Balga. I visited the family a year before (in late 1987) and after Uncle Robert passed away, ... before Christmas 1988. Aunty Daisy Yvette has 7 children and 15 grandchildren today (2017).

------
Uncle Robert's family
I met Uncle Robert only once - in Balga. I did not get to meet him in Malaysia as we lived in Sabah then. My cousin Muhamed Al-Jeffry had met him in Malaysia before the family emigrated to Australia. I phoned Aunty Daisy to ask about Uncle Robert's family. This is what I can share from my notes. Aunty Daisy is very old now (82 in 2017); her information maybe correct or partially correct. I will curate once I get some document or proof. She is 88 in 2023,

His parents:
Father: Robert Oliver Jansz
Mother: Victorine Alfonso
Children: (Aunty Daisy only mentioned 5 names; she was uncertain if there was 5 or 6)
  1. Lawrence - died young a long time before Aunty Daisy married.
  2. Phyllis - emigrated to England before Aunty Daisy married.
  3. Lydia (1928-2009) - married to cousin Clifford Jansz. Emigrated to Australia
  4. Hazel - married to Reginald Kingsley (both in Daisy's 1953 wedding photo) - emigrated to Australia
  5. Robert Bertram Jansz (1931-1988) (groom in 1953 wedding photo) - married Daisy Yvette Che Lah. Emigrated to Australia in 1968.
------
Robert Oliver Jansz (father of groom)
He was an electrician and worked at the hospital in Port Dickson where Dr Che Lah worked. They were close friends and played tennis together at the Club House. Even though their parents were close friends, Aunty Daisy did not know Uncle Robert Bertram then. I cannot verify where and when Robert Oliver Jansz was born. Aunty Daisy does not know when her in-law's family migrated to Malaya.

-------
Victorine Alfonso (mother of groom)
She was born and married in Ceylon. She worked as a matron at the big Pudu Jail in Kuala Lumpur.

-------
Pudu Jail in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Pudu Jail was a big jail in Kuala Lumpur. I saw the grounds of Pudu Jail from the monorail. I took some photos of Pudu Jail from the train. It was difficult to take photos because the train was packed. Pudu Jail was demolished but is still much discussed in forums.

------
Anthony Alfonso
He was a brother of Victorine Alfonso. He worked at the X-ray Department, GHKL.
http://www.e-mjm.org/1994/v49n3/Radiology_1920s.pdf

------
Mandurah, Western Australia
From Balga, Aunty Daisy moved south to Mandurah, Western Australia in November 2011. Her 7 married children live in Perth and the eldest lives near Mandurah. Mandurah is both a swampy area with creeks and rivers, plus build-up areas. There could be billabongs. There are sandy areas beyond. There is not so dense jungle where her eldest daughter lives.

My husband Affandi and my younger son Ibrahim visited Aunty Daisy in October 2012. Ibrahim has all the reunion photos of October 2012 (ask him on Facebook). Affandi has Aunty Daisy's address and phone #. I used his phone for overseas phone calls because his is a better and more powerful phone; mine has no signal.

Mandurah is by the coast, farther down south of Perth. Take the train from Perth Station direct to Mandurah Station (with a few stops along the way, depending on which train line). Ask Affandi.

PHONE CALL#1
Affandi and I phoned Aunty Daisy. Unfortunately, Aunty Daisy does not use the computer and is not connected to the Internet. So we can't be connected online on Facebook. But she is fine and healthy, with memory failing a bit. But she remembers me as Tulip's daughter and the one who did PhD at UWA way back more than 20 years ago (when her husband Robert passed away). She asked me to come and visit her. In sya Allah, I will do just that.

PHONE CALL#2
I last called Aunty Daisy Yvette on 4 September 2017. She remembers me as "Faridah from Malaysia" and "Tulip's daughter" and the one who wrote the book about her father. She asked if I was going to write another book. I told her no. I told her that I was helping to collect research data for a Burgher database in Holland. She sounded happy and it was nice talking to her again. I had tears when it was time to hang up. I hope to get to visit her again, but teaching has just begun.

My husband listened to our conversation all the while, and I jotted whatever I could on my academic timetable - now it is a big mess! Actually my husband dialled and I was not prepared to talk to Aunty Daisy. I was trying to find a piece of paper to jot things down. But he already dialled her. I am grateful to him for letting me use his phone and for helping me with the names of places in Perth and KL. He knows places more than I do. He is better at retaining information than I am, especially phone conversation. I often forget the minute I turned off the phone.

Aunty Daisy said she doesn't cook spicy dishes anymore. She laughed when I mentioned sambal udang kering.
