Old Dutch Surnames - Krasse and de Coursey

Malaysian historian, Andrew Hwang, says the 2 names Krasse and de Coursey are old Dutch surnames. They are not Portuguese names as once thought.

Therefore, Emma Krasse and Daisy Catherine de Coursey Bulner had old Dutch surnames.

---------

Spelling of Old Dutch Surnames - de Coursey spelling

There are many ways to spell the old Dutch surname. I have seen many different spellings of the same name. Below are some of the spellings known.

De Coursey
De Courcy
de Coursey
deCoursey
de Courcy
DeCourcy
Courcey
Courci
Curci

"Spellings of DeCourcy include Courcey, Courci, Coursey, and Curci. There is general agreement that these are all simple variations on the same name and not separate families." - De Courcy History

The name is said to have originated from Chateau Courcy near Reims in 925 AD.

"Chateau Courcy near Reims (rebuilt numerous times – but no longer in existence) This is where the Courcy name was born circa 925."  - De Courcy History

Tulip bt Che Lah (1) Birth

This is my mother Tulip's birth certificate. I've tried my best to read the minute details and the cursive handwriting on the fragile photocopy. She was born on 4 November 1931 at Tanglin Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. She told me she was born a premature baby, and I believed her.

WH Amour had registered her birth 6 days after she was born. Who was he/she? Why didn't her own father register his eldest daughter? Was he working outstation? Where did he work in November 1931? Why did her mother deliver her at this hospital and not the European Hospital? Who was attending to her mother?

This copy of her birth certificate was obtained on 8 December 1931, about a month after she was born.

BULNER Family Tree (from MUNDIA)

This is about the best search result that has almost all the Bulner information we need. I stumbled on it when I Googled 'Bulner obituaries' and omitted the name 'Bulmer', which I think is an Australian based family name. There are photos of almost everyone.

http://www.uk.mundia.com/gb/Search/Results?surname=BULNER&birthPlace=United%20Kingdom
** FYI, MUNDIA has closed down in September 2011.

Here are some interesting information I found (edited to avoid confusion).

FIRST GENERATION
JACOB BULNER I OF OSNABERG, GERMANY (born c.1722-1731- died 25 May 1790)

Jacob Bulner was from Osnaberg, Germany. His date of birth (DOB) is unknown. He probably was born circa 1731.

He must have been at least in his mid-20s or so when he got married. This means he was most probably born circa 1731. His birth should be recorded in Osnaberg's birth register in Germany.

Since he had enlisted with the Dutch VOC on 31 January 1752, then his name and age should be in the respective registration list or recruitment list of the VOC that made it to Ceylon on Saturday, 12 August 1752.

SECOND GENERATION
JACOB BULNER II (c.1780)

Nothing is known about him.

THIRD GENERATION
JACOB BULNER III (c.1800)

Jacob Bulner III was born in Mannar, Ceylon. Jacob Bulner III married Magdalena Elizabeth Vandyn on 31 January 1826 at St John's Church, Mannar in Ceylon. They had 4 children:
  1. Gertruda Carolina Bulner (1824-)
  2. Jacob Bulner IV (1827-)
  3. William Ethelwald Godfrey Bulner (1829-)
  4. John Peter Bulner (1833-)

FOURTH GENERATION
JACOB BULNER IV (1827-)

Jacob Bulner IV (born 1827, Mannar, Ceylon) married Princess Van Rooyen. They had a son, Lawrence Peter John Bulner (1840-1920). The dates point to a teenage marriage? If the dates are correct, then Jacob Bulner was only 13 when he married? Is this correct?

FIFTH GENERATION
LAWRENCE PETER JOHN BULNER (13 May 1840-7 November 1920)

Lawrence Peter John Bulner was born on 13 May 1840 in Talaimannar, Ceylon. He was a watchmaker. He died on 7 November 1920.

4. Isabel @ Sheila Bulner (born on 18 May 1920 in Malaya)
5. Maurice Bulner (born in Malaya)
6. Humphry @ Edward Bulner (born in Malaya)

Note: I have retained the name Frederick William Bulner here because that was the name I obtained from my mother. Moreover, Dr Che Lah's marriage certificate also has that name if I remember correctly.

June Che Lah

Jamaliah June Che Lah  (born Friday, 29 June 1934-died 12 May 1990) is the third daughter of Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos, an early Malay doctor. Aunty June was a kindergarten teacher in Ipoh and the Calvary Child Care in Damansara Heights. She married to Devdass Kingsley Nathaniel on 8 February 1958. They lived in Ipoh before moving to Kuala Lumpur. They had 5 children:-
  1. Stephanie Druscilla Nathaniel
  2. Gerald Kingsley Nathaniel
  3. Rex Allan Nathaniel married Susann Lee. They have 2 children - Claris Nathaniel and Kevin Nathaniel. Rex is deceased. He died of a massive infarct when trying to chop a tree (according to Jeffrey).
  4. Vanessa Gloria Nathaniel married Peter Yang. They have 3 children - Ian Timothy Yang, Melody Grace Yang, and Tabita Hope Yang. Vanessa has remarried.
  5. Amanda Zoe Nathaniel
June and Rex are deceased. Stephanie and Amanda live in Kuala Lumpur. Vanessa lives in Perth. Stephanie, Vanessa and Amanda are in Facebook.

I have never met Aunty June face-to-face except for one occasion at Pak Saleh's house during kenduri arwah for my step-uncle, Uncle Philip @ Mohd Noor, who died of complications following a brain tumour surgery performed at GH Penang. I have not seen the death certificate of this uncle, and therefore I cannot point to the date (40 days after death) or date of this chance meeting with June.
I met Aunty June once circa 1975 when she was walked past me at Pak Saleh's house in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. I was seated against the wall and she and her sisters and their families walked past me. I thought they were important people as they didn't look anything like me. I had thought they were Orang Puteh but later I found out that they were Burghers.

In dating these photos below, I have used events that occurred from the many accounts of many family members. A misleading piece of information was the exact date of Dr Che Lah's birth. Nobody knows for sure what the correct date of birth (DOB) for Dr Che Lah is. There are presently 2 dates, 10 December 1903 and 10 December 1904. In his application papers, Dr Che Lah wrote 1903 as his birth year. However, for his birthdays and headstone, the families used 1904. I have mentioned these conflicting dates in his biography. I will mention the correct birth date once I get permission from JPN (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara) to check its database records. I have not returned to JPN with the evidence it needed.

Esther Schokman 1933-2018

Esther (born 10 March 1933) is the second daughter of Dr Che Lah bin Mohd Joonos and Daisy Catherine Decoursey Bulner. Dr Che Lah was an early Malay doctor in British Malaya and Malaysia.

Esther had worked in the accounts department of the Malayan Railway Administration (MRA) in Kuala Lumpur. It is not known when she started working with the MRA but she retired from the MRA in 1988.

MRA Building external links

Esther married to Aelian Cantlay Schokman at the St Mary's Church in Kuala Lumpur on 5 September 1959. They have 2 children - Muhamed Al-Jeffrey Schokman bin Abdullah (1961) and Veronica Alison Christobel Schokman (1964).

Muhamed Al-Jeffrey Schokman married Siti Noor Azar binti Majid (1961). They have 4 children - Muhamed Armin Schokman (1987), Nurlisa Sharmin Schokman (1990), Muhamed Aiman Schokman (1993), and Nur Hanis Schokman (1996).

I met Esther and Jeffrey at Impiana KLCC in 2009. I didn't meet Aelian as I was informed he was unwell and had just returned from the hospital. I had completed the first 40 drafts on my book on The Early Malay Doctors. We went through her father's biography and made additions and corrections. She was thrilled. I have sent her my published book via her son Jeffrey.

Jeffrey informed that his wife Siti Noor Azar had left her pharmacy job to do something else.

Veronica Alison Christobel Schokman married once but is now single. I have met Veronica once. She has a lot of photos of herself and relatives in her Facebook. She has a cousin named Jack Schokman who runs a photography business in Perth. She also has an uncle named Ossy.

Aelian Cantlay Schokman passed away on 15 May 2011.
Esther Schokman passed away on 24 June 2018.
