Rubber trees

People who lived at Sg Renggam Estate

In 1916, Guy Everard Speldewinde lived at Sungai Renggam Estate, the same place where FW Bulner and family lived (in 1920). They might be friends or relatives.

  • 1916: Guy Everard Speldewinde lived at Sungai Renggam Estate. He married Eulie at St Barnabas Church in Klang in 1916.

Humphrey @ Edward Kenneth Bulner

Humphrey @ Edward Kenneth Bulner was the youngest of 6 siblings. He married Marion (a German) and lived overseas in England. He came down to Malaysia to visit my aunt Esther. There is a photo of Jeffrey and Humphrey. I have never met my maternal granduncle Humphrey.

Granduncle Humphrey @ Edward Kenneth Bulner

--------------
Update from Danny Aruna Burns in Messenger, 15 March 2019.
I only replied on 24 March 2019 as I was away in Saudi Arabia for Umrah, 12-22 March 2019.

Aruna's parents are Edward Kenneth Bulner aka Humphrey and Marion.

Edward Kenneth Bulner was born on 7 February 1930 in Klang, Selangor, Malaya (now Malaysia). He is the youngest of 6 siblings l. He was the only one surviving in March 2019. He passed away on 11 June 2020.

His parents were from Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). His father (Aruna's grandfather, Mr F. W. Bulner) was manager of a rubber plantation in Malaya prior to World War 2. (This was the Sungai Renggam Estate in Selangor.) It is believed they were forced to leave for Singapore when World War 2 broke out in Malaya. They mostly probably left for Singapore in the post-war as Eurasians were all interned in Singapore.

The late Marion was German. She came to England at the same time as Humphrey.

They married and lived in the UK.

They have two children - a girl named Aruna (b.1970) and a boy named Karsten (b.1974).

They were still married and they all lived in the UK in March 2019.

Aruna sent a photo of her parents and her three children - Leila, Brandon and Leon. Leon turned 18 on 19 December 2020.

Aruna sent a recent photo of Edward Kenneth Bulner aged 89, but the photo did not get passed to me via Messenger.

===============================
Update on Edward Kenneth Bulner.

Edward Bulner (7 February 1930-11 June 2020)

Granduncle Humphrey passed away on 11 June 2020 at Rothsay Grange Nursing Home.

He was the beloved husband of the late Marion, his German wife.

He was a devoted and loving Dad to 2 children, Aruna and Karsten.

He was Grandad to grandchildren: Kia, Dj, Maya, Leila, Brandon and Leon.

VOC History

INTRODUCTION

THE VOC
 Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie

VOC FORMATION
https://kalden.home.xs4all.nl/verm/tour-k-amsterdamboat-vocENG.html

The  Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) was originally established as a chartered company in 1602. The Dutch Government granted it a 21-year monopoly on the Dutch spice trade (till 1623) but the VOC continued trading spices for another 176 years, till it finally ended in bankruptcy in 1799. The VOC ceased operations altogether on 31 December 1799.

The VOC was founded by Johan van Oldenbarnevelt on 20 March 1602. The VOC Headquarters was in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Asian HQ was in Batavia (Jakarta) in Java, Indonesia.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oy4YSbhAiRE

The VOC was the United East Indian Company, and was referred to by the British as the Dutch East India Company (Dutch EIC). It was both a trading company and also had military power. It hired Swiss and German mercenaries to safeguard Dutch trade interests in the East Indies. The mercenaries killed anyone who tried to stop Dutch forces and advancement in the East Indies.

Success of the VOC:
http://www.cultuurwijs.nl/cultuurwijs.nl/cultuurwijs.nl/i000270.html

VOC HEADQUARTERS

The VOC had 4 chambers (offices) based in Amsterdam, at the Cape of Good Hope and in Ceylon. Wherever they worked the VOC men had to report to their respective chamber, which took care of their salaries and noted what they borrowed from VOC funds and therefore owed the VOC. There were no banks then.

VOC BASES IN THE EAST INDIES

Apart from Texel Island at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, the VOC established numerous bases in Asia.
  1. Colombo, Galle, Jaffna, Kandy, Kalpitiya etc in Ceylon
  2. Banda Hilir in Malacca
  3. Bencoolen in Sumatra and Batavia (now Jakarta) in Java, both in Indonesia
  4. Canton & Macau
  5. Japan.

I took this photo of the VOC canon which was recovered from the VOC ship Batavia, which was shipwrecked in the Straits of Malacca while on its voyage home to the Netherlands. This canon was named Bunga Rambai. The canon was relocated to Fort Cornwallis in George Town, Penang. In Malay, bunga rambai refers to the flowers of the rambai tree. The rambai trees grow plentifully in hilly areas of the equatorial jungles. The small rambai fruit (buah rambai) is seasonal and edible. BUAH RAMBAI | POKOK RAMBAI | BATAVIA

VOC COMMANDERS

The VOC Dutch Commanders were in charge till they were replaced by the British East India Company (British EIC) Commanders, beginning with Colonel James Stuart in 1796. By 1824, the British EIC took over the Dutch VOC and ruled the East Indies - including Ceylon, Java and Malacca.

VOC SERVICEMEN

The VOC servicemen had a 6-year contract with the VOC which they were attached to. But many VOC men worked till they died in office. Their demise and other outcomes (ran away etc) were recorded in the respective VOC ledgers.

The VOC sent its male personnel to South Africa, Ceylon and Java. The Dutch Caucasian males then married local women in South Africa, Ceylon and Java. In Ceylon, their offspring were referred to as Dutch Burghers - they had dark complexion, looked Indian or mixed, had Dutch and British names, but had a white male founder ancestor.
http://www.vochistory.org.au/index.html

VOC DOWNFALL

The VOC ended in 1799 as a bankrupt company which suffered huge losses. It had to be terminated by the Holland Government. The VOC was no more and the British Commanders were in charge of trade in the East Indies. Jacob Bulner was no longer a Sergeant in the VOC since he was deceased by 25 March 1790, before the VOC ended.

Catherine (Kate Angelina) Shutt married Martin Lewis Kuhn in Pennsylvania in 1868/69. Their daughter is Mary Ann (born 1869). Catherine and Martin were in the US 1870 Census.
From Ancestry Message Board:
I'm looking for information on a Catherine (Kate Angelina) Shutt, she married my gr-gr-grandfather, Martin Lewis Kuhn, in Westmoreland County PA in 1868 or 1869. they had at least one child, Mary Ann,b 1869. Very likely that they had more children. I have lost Catherine and Martin after the 1870 census. I know when Martin returned to Westmoreland Co in 1868 following the death of my gr-gr-grandmother, he bought land in Salem township, and lived there with Catherine. I have not been able to look at the deeds for that time to see when he would have sold the land. If you know anything about this couple, please email me at kuhns9@comcast.net Thank you

From Malayan Volunteers Group:
Looking for information on my great grandparents.
My great grandmothers name was Grace Paul, and she arrived in Malacca from Ceylon in 1917/1918.She was in a relationship with a German Dr Kuhne. This union produced a child, my grandmother, who was born in 1919. The relationship did not last and my great grandmother went on to marry NB Mathias. My grandmother was adopted by NB Mathias and was known as NB Kusalawati. My grandmother later had 5 half brothers and sisters from Grace Paul's marriage to NB Mathias. The family left for Singapore just before the war. If anyone has any information at all about these people, it would be so greatly appreciated. Thank You.

===============

What can we understand from the above information? Probably something like this ...

First generation
JACOB BULNER
  1. Jacob Bulner (VOC soldier) enlisted on 31 January 1752 Amsterdam, Holland
  2. Jacob Bulner was already married before he left Amsterdam.
  3. Did he marry or partner in Ceylon since the VOC did not encourage its soldiers to marry locals (Ceylonese).
  4. Jacob Bulner's son was born in Holland or Ceylon. His son is Joseph Bulner? He was a young sailor from Deblits in Germany on VOC records.
  5. Which wife/partner gave birth to his son?
  6. When was his son born?
  7. His son left for Batavia.
  8. Jacob Bulner probably had a sister or siblings?

HENDRINA & HENDRIKA BULNER

Who were they?
  1. Hendrina Bulner (died 19 September 1816 at Rijssen)
  2. Hendrika Bulner (died 21 June 1818 at Rijssen).

LEIJDE MANUSSEN BULNER

Who was Leijde Mannussen Bulner?
  1. Leijde Mannussen Bulner (Rijssen) married and had 2 children - a son, Theunis Bulner (born in Holland) and a daughter, Hendrika Bulner (died 16 Feb 1866) Almelo Ambt. Her children were born before 1787.
  2. Leijde Manussen Bulner was the mother of the bride at Rijssen. The marriage occurred on 4 March 1814. Her daughter Leidje Lubbers married Hendrikus Koenderink.

Second generation
JOSEPH BULNER
  • Joseph Bulner, enlisted on 2 June 1787 in the service of East India Company.
  • Joseph Bulner (from Deblits, Germany) served as a young sailor in Amsterdam Chamber.
  • Saturday, 2 June 1787 outbound. Departure of the ship Zeevart towards Batavia
  • Monday, 10 September 1787 (100 days of departure) Arrival of ship Zeevaart on the Cape
  • Saturday, 24 November 1787 (75 days after arrival at the Cape) voyage out of the ship Zeevaart from the Cape
  • Wednesday, 13 February 1788 (81 days after departure from the Cape, 256 days after leaving the Netherlands) Arrival of ship Zeevart in Batavia (Jakarta on Java island in Indonesia).
  • Thursday, 17 November 1791 (1629 days of employment) Resignation of Joseph Bulner (Cape of Good Hope), reason: free citizen
  1. Joseph Bulner was most probably raised and married in Holland, before leaving Holland.
  2. However, there were no marriages recorded of the Bulner family before 1752, and between 1752 and 1787.
  3. Joseph Bulner probably married ___ (?)
  4. Joseph Bulner (VOC soldier) enlisted on 2 June 1787 room Amsterdam
  5. Joseph Bulner reached Batavia on 13 February 1788.
  6. Since Joseph Bulner went straight to Batavia, he probably did not get to meet his father Jacob Bulner who was in Ceylon.
  7. Joseph Bulner did not get to meet his father in Ceylon, before his father died on 25 May 1790.
  8. So Joseph Bulner never knew and never met his father as an adult (unless there was an arrangement to get them to meet each other). Any records of ship's passage and their names on the passenger list?

Third generation
THEUNIS BULNER
  1. Theunis Bulner was Sergeant Theunis Bulner in the army.
  2. Theunis Bulner married Aleida Bulner (she died 28 November 1894 Nijverdal, Hellendoorn).
  3. Theunis and Aleida had a daughter named Leijde Bulner.
  4. Theunis probably died young and his wife Aleida Bulner remarried.
  5. Aleida Bulner remarried to Gerrit Jan Seppenwoolt and became Aleida Seppenwoolt.
  6. Aleida and Gerrit have a daughter, Martha Seppenwoolt.
Fourth generation
LEIDJE BULNER & MARTHA SEPPENWOOLT
  1. Aleida Bulner's elder daughter Leijde Bulner married on 25 February 1831 at Wierden
  2. A second daughter Martha Seppenwoolt married twice. She first married on 1 September 1849 at Wierden. She remarried on 8 October 1869 at Hellendoorn

Second generation
(2) JOSEPH BULNER (VOC sailor, enlisted 2 June 1787 Amsterdam)

Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) » Inventaris nr. 6763
East India Company (VOC) »Inventory no. 6763

VOC: voyagers, occupant name: Joseph

Name occupant Joseph
Name occupant Bulner
Origin occupant: Deblits (in Germany)
Date of appointment: 1787-06-02 (Saturday, 2 June 1787)
Function when taking: Young sailor (junior ordinary seaman)
Explaining function: Ordinary seaman
Sailed away with the ship Zeevaart (Holland); departure of the ship Zeevaart bound for Batavia
---------
Arrival of the ship Zeevaart at Cape of Good Hope: Monday, 10 September 1787 (100 days after departure). The ship Zeevart remained for 75 days at the Cape of Good Hope before sailing away to Batavia. Departure of the ship Zeevaart from the Cape of Good Hope: Saturday, 24 November 1787
--------
Arrival of the ship Zeevaart in Batavia: Wednesday, 13 February 1788 (81 days after departure from the Cape; 256 days after departure from the Netherlands)
--------
It seems that Joseph Bulner did not stay in Batavia till the end of the VOC rule, but instead had returned to the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa and resigned from there when the VOC ended.
Resignation of Joseph Bulner from the Cape of Good Hope: Thursday, 17 November 1791 (1629 days after employment); reason - free citizen.
--------
Date of service 1791-11-17 (Thursday, 17 November 1791) ... the date he resigned from the VOC and became a free man.
Where service from: the Cape of Good Hope ... so he was at the Cape when he resigned.
Reason service: Free Burger ... he was a free man, a free Burgher ... Free Burger means free civil.
--------
The VOC regime ceased in 1791 (1602-1791). All the VOC soldiers, crew and seamen were free of VOC rules and regulations. They became "free men". They were no longer bound by VOC rules and regulations. This means that the free men could now marry - this would be from 1791 onward when the VOC ended
--------
After Joseph Bulner became a free man, he probably married at the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, or went to Ceylon and married there.
--------
Explaining why termination of employment: This is entered as the last item and indicates that the occupant was a free citizen. [Sometimes a person on board was a free citizen and then enters into service. If a crew member is a free citizen and given the date of death, state this in the comments.]

The Dutch Houses in Ceylon

Sinhalese was Buddhist or Hindus
Portuguese was Catholic
Dutch was Protestant; they killed all others
Moors were Muslims; they retreated to highlands of the interior

Sinhalese call it Sri Lanka
Portuguese called it Ceilao
Dutch called it Zeyland/Zeilan
British called it Ceylon

When the Dutch occupied Ceylon after the Portuguese, they lived inside the Portuguese forts until they were overcrowded and had to live outside the forts. The Dutch lived in their own communities and enclaves. They were in Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and many highland towns. They had initially occupied the lowlands, but floods forced them to retreat to the hills.

Today, after 221 years, the remains of the Dutch dwellings can still be seen at many places in Sri Lanka (old Ceylon). Some have been restored to beautiful boutique hotels. Many have been left dilapidated and are now in crumbles and remains can still be seen on the ground.

The architecture of these Dutch dwellings are a delight to know. They are distinct items of architecture - the Dutch houses, Dutch doors, Dutch windows and courtyards. They are brick houses, built in a U-formation and have corridors with gigantic cylindrical cloumns. The doors are huge and the windows with glass inside frames and external wooden shutters. They have porcelain roof tiles, typical of those at the time.

The ground outside is loose red stones. The lawn can be expansive and with trees to demarcate the boundaries. The dwellings are built high in the hills, with tiny roads leading up to the front courtyard.

The furniture is typical Dutch black wooden chairs, tables, sofas and hutches. There is also a wine cabinet for tiny wine bottles. There are wicker ottomans and winged upholstered chairs. There are cushions with owner's family crest. There is also a family name or household name inscribed on the lowest step.

Most of the Dutch dwellings in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) are similar to the ones we find in Malaya (now Malaysia). Dutch Malacca still has some of the Dutch & British colonial homes, but they are the restored or newly rebuilt ones. Only a few such houses have withstood 220+ years.

The British fought against the Dutch & Kandyans at Kandy in 1803 and in the end won Kandy in 1815. After wining Kandy, the Kandyans were stripped of land ownership and were reduced to poverty. Kandy was cool and conducive for growing initially coffee, later replaced by tea, spices and rubber. Ceylon tea was highly profitable and indentured labourers were imported from South India.

Under British rule, the population was divided and each ruled differently. The British favoured the Burghers, upper-class Sinhalese and Tamils in the north. The poor Sinhalese had no support. Thus, enmity grew between the colonials and the colonized.

When World War II (WW2) occurred, Colombo was bombed. The Colombo Fort was also bombed. The Indians who were the economists of Ceylon fled home to India. Ceylon had less Indians.
