Sixth generation:
(6) FREDERICK WILLIAM BULNER (1872-1961)

Frederick William Bulner was a German Burgher born on 16 January 1872 in (Kandy) Ceylon. He worked in Ceylon and managed the firm Bulner Brothers. He married a Dutch Burgher named Emma Frances Krasse and they had 6 children. His children are therefore German-Dutch Burghers.

1. The family emigrated from Ceylon to Malaya, after their first child was born in 1911.
2. Their exact date of migration to Malaya is unknown. Passenger list will have three names - FW Bulner, Emma F Krasse and Katherine Daisy Decoursey Bulner.
3. They probably emigrated between 1911 and 1916. Their next child was possibly born in 1916.
4. Frederick Joseph Bulner (FJ Bulner) @ Freddie was born in Malaya, possibly in 1916.
5. Penelope Bulner was born in Malaya, possibly in 1918.
6. Sheila Bulner @ Isabel was born in Malaya on 18 May 1920.
7. From NvD: Isabel @ Sheila Bulner was born on 18 May 1920 (based on register at St Mary's Church in Kuala Lumpur. Father: Frederick William Bulner; Mother: Eva.)
8. The family migrated after 1911 - after their eldest child Catherine Daisy Decoursey Bulner was born in 1911 in Ceylon, and before the rest of the children were born in Malaya; before 1916 - before Guy & Eulie married in 1916 in KL; before 1920 - before Isabel @ Sheila was born in 1920 in KL; before 1930 - before Catherine married to Dr Che Lah in 1931 in KL.
9. However, according to my mother Tulip, the family migrated when their eldest daughter Catherine Daisy was a teenager, and before the last 2 children (Maurice Bulner and Humphrey Bulner) were born - they were born in Malaya. This is misleading because it indicates a later date of emigration. Catherine Daisy was born in 1911 and she would be 13 in 1924, ie teenager after 1924, but Sheila was born in 1920 in Malaya. So my mother's statement conflicted with current evidence.
10. An undated family photo from Jeffrey Schokman showed the couple with 4 of their elder children - Katherine Daisy, Penelope, Frederick Joseph @ Freddie and Sheila @ Isabel (then a baby). Where was this photo taken? Was this photo taken on 6 August 1921 at Sheila's baptism at St Mary's Church in KL, Malaya? 
11. If this photo was taken on 6 August 1921, then FW Bulner was 49 years old, Emma was in her late 30s, Daisy Katherine was 10 years old, Penelope was about 5 years old, Freddie was about 3 years old, and baby Sheila was 1 year old. Emma would be less than 39 years old as she had 2 more babies after Sheila - Maurice and Humphrey. Emma would be about 42-4 = 38 years old; meaning she was probably born circa 1921-38 = 1883. Then need to check her family tree to see if her birth date fits her age and birth order.

• Parents: father - Lawrence Peter Bulner (L P Bulner); mother - Jane Catherine Davies
• Sibs: 11 (7 boys + 4 girls) 
• Birth order: He was #2/11 siblings
• Occupation: He worked at 2 places, first in Ceylon, and then in Malaya.

1. He managed Bulner Brothers, a firm in Ceylon. 
2. He was a British clerk at Sungai Renggam Estate in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malaya (1920). Danny Aruna Burns wrote that Mr FW Bulner was manager of a rubber plantation. Sungai Renggam Estate was located between Klang and Kuala Lumpur.

• Marriage: He married Emma Frances Krasse, probably circa 1910, when he was 38 years old. Emma was probably about 27 years old (if she was born circa 1883).
• # of children: He had 6 children:

1. Katherine Daisy Decoursey, born 5 March 1911 Kandy, Ceylon; died 9 April 1981 Kuala Lumpur. Buried at Kajang Christian Cemetery, Selangor. Studied nursing in Malaya. Worked as a clerk at a military base near Gombak area. Decoursey is also spelled as De Coursey.
2. Frederick Joseph Bulner @ Freddie was born in Malaya, possibly in 1916. Died 1961.
3. Penelope Bulner was born in Malaya, possibly in 1918.
4. Sheila Bulner @ Isabel was born on 18 May 1920, but was listed in the St Mary's Church register on 6 August 1921. Was it her baptism?
5. Maurice Bulner was born in Malaya, possibly in 1925. He helped out with the church. My mother (Tulip) said he was mentally challenged.
6. Edward Kenneth Bulner @ Humphrey was born in Malaya on 7 February 1930. He married Marion and they live in London, UK. He visited relatives in Singapore and my aunt Esther in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Jeffrey has a photo taken with him. His son Danny Aruna Burns sent a photo of the couple and Aruna's children.

Grandmother and Great-Grandmother

My cousin Amanda Zoe Nathaniel keeps many family photos of her family. My late Aunty June was her mother. I went through her Facebook photo album and found 2 photos which I thought I would never get to see. These are the photos of my maternal grandmother and my great-grandmother. My mother used to tell us a lot about them when I was a little girl.

This is my mother's family tree. It was prepared online by my cousin Muhamed Al-Jeffrey Schokman Abdullah with the help of many others. Most of the family tree members are in Facebook.

My maternal great-grandfather was Frederick William Bulner (my mother said he was a German/Bavarian). My maternal great-grandmother was Emma Frances Krasse (she was Dutch; my mother said she was pretty).

My maternal grandmother was born Katherine Daisy de Coursey Bulner (also written as Decoursey Bulner). When she married my grandfather, she was named Maimunah Daisy and was called Munah. Their English wedding was registered at the historic St Mary's Church in Kuala Lumpur. This church is level with the nearby field (Padang Merdeka). Aunty Esther gave me their English certificate of marriage. Aunty Esther said they followed the rites of the Church of England.

My grandmother's youngest brother, Humphry @ Edward Bulner, recently came to visit KL and met with my aunt Esther and her son Jeffrey. Jeffrey has a photo in Facebook. We still have many maternal relatives in Singapore.

My maternal grandfather was Dr Che Lah bin Mohamed Joonos (pronounced You-nose). In the Dutch alphabet, the letter J has a Y sound. The same is true in Spanish. He was an early Malay doctor from Penang. I wrote about him in both my books on The Early Malay Doctors. He worked as a doctor mainly in Kuantan, Kuala Lumpur and Sungai Buloh. At that time, Malay doctors were treated as second class citizens and were paid half of what their British counterparts received. That's Malay history of medicine in British Malaya.

My late mother was born Jumabee Tulip bt Che Lah. She was born at Tanglin Hospital and raised in KL till age 23. 

My late father was born at home at Imbi Road in Kuala Lumpur. He was Abdul Rashid bin Mohamed Yusope in KL. He was a big bully in his village (jaguh kampung). He was of Persian-Arab and Minangkabau-Chinese mix). His mother was Javanese Malay from Kg Baru, Kuala Lumpur.

My maternal blood aunts are Esther, June and Daisy. I met my 3 aunts when I was about 16-17 during the memorial service (tahlil) for Uncle Philip at Pak Saleh's house in Sentul, KL. Aunty June had passed away long ago in 1990. Her children live in KL. Aunty Esther lives in KL, near Jeffrey's house. Aunty Daisy lives in Western Australia.
