Enquiry about my father, Derrick Percival Speldewinde

I am trying to find out if my father  who enlisted in the Malayan Volunteers. I was told recently that my uncle Harold Speldewinde, recently deceased, and my father had both enlisted but were told at the fall of Penang to get out of uniform and blend into the local population for the duration of the conflict. My father went on to serve with Special Branch in Malaya during the Emergency and my uncle was also a decorated war veteran.

With the departure of Mr H Kahlcke for Europe, the management of the Hotel de la Paix has now been taken over by Mr Percy Bulner, and it may be expected that this popular hotel will prove as inviting as ever. Mr Bulner had large experience in hotel management in Ceylon before coming to Singapore and has also been for some time assistant manager at the Hotel de la Paix.

Coleman Street in Singapore

Coleman Street was named after an Irish architect named George Drumgoole Coleman. He was the first Superintendent of Public Works, Singapore from 1833 to 1841.

----
Hotel de la Paix

Hotel de la Paix was established at 3 Coleman House, Coleman Street, Singapore in 1865. It was one of the earliest hotels established in Singapore before WWI. It was a first class hotel in its heyday. It operated in the personal residence of George Drumgoole Coleman, who was the first Superintendent of Public Works in Singapore (1833-1841). Mr Coleman left Singapore in 1841.

Mr Coleman's residence continued to house other famous hotels and residences such as the Gaston Dutronquoy, London Hotel, Adelphi Hotel, Hotel de la Paix, Tan Yeok Nee residence, Burlington Hotel, and again Hotel de la Paix till 1919 (after WWI).

The Adelphi Hotel was used for the graduation dinner to celebrate the medical graduates of the King Edward VII (KE VII) College of Medicine since 1910 (Dr Che Lah bin Md Joonos graduated in March 1930).

The previous manager of Hotel de la Paix was a widowed Mrs Kahlcke. Her husband was Mr H Kahlcke. He had returned to Europe (probably died there). Mr Percy Bulner became its new manager in 1904.

The death took place at Sydney on Jan 10, after a very long and trying illness of Mrs Bulner, wife of Mr Percy Bulner of the Bangkok Dock Co, with whom much sympathy will be felt. Mrs Bulner had lived in Bangkok for many years.

----
My comments:
It seems that 2 Bulner brothers went to work in Bangkok, Siam:
1. #5/9 Thomas Percival Bulner (born 25 July 1877)(Mr Percy Bulner - Bangkok Dock Co,)
2. #7/9 John Walter Bulner (born 4 February 1883) - ?

The 2 brothers are the sons of Lawrence Peter Bulner and Jane Catherine Davies. The couple have 11 children - 7 boys and 4 girls.
